The People of ʿĀd and Thamūd

Case Status
🟢 Authentic Islamic Evidence Found
The Mystery
Scattered across the deserts of Arabia are enormous rock carved homes, ruined cities and ancient inscriptions.
Who built them?
Could they really have been the mighty nations of ʿĀd and Thamūd mentioned in the Qur'an?
Were they giants?
Or have stories grown larger than the evidence?
Let's investigate.
Level One
What Does the Qur'an Say?
Allah tells us about two remarkable nations that lived after Prophet Nūḥ (AS).
The first was ʿĀd, to whom Prophet Hūd (AS) was sent.
The second was Thamūd, to whom Prophet Ṣāliḥ (AS) was sent.
Allah says:
"Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿĀd, with Iram, city of lofty pillars, the like of which had never been created in the land?"
(Qur'an 89:6 to 8)
About Thamūd, Allah says:
"And Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley."
(Qur'an 89:9)
Allah also says:
"Remember when He made you successors after ʿĀd and settled you in the land, so you built palaces on its plains and carved homes into the mountains."
(Qur'an 7:74)
The Qur'an clearly confirms:
✔ Both nations were real.
✔ Allah sent prophets to them.
✔ They possessed great strength and engineering ability.
✔ Both rejected Allah's message.
✔ Both were destroyed by Allah.

Level Two
What Does Authentic Sunnah Tell Us?
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ passed by the abandoned dwellings of Thamūd during the expedition to Tabūk.
He instructed the companions not to enter their homes except while weeping, lest they be afflicted by what afflicted those people.
He also instructed them not to drink from the wells used by Thamūd, except one well associated with the she camel of Prophet Ṣāliḥ (AS).
(Sahih al Bukhari 433, Sahih Muslim 2980)
This confirms something remarkable.
The ruins of Thamūd still existed during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ.

Level Three
What Does History Tell Us?
Today, many scholars associate Thamūd with the archaeological site of Madā'in Ṣāliḥ (Hegra) in present day Saudi Arabia.
Its mountains contain magnificent tombs carved directly into the rock.
These carvings closely resemble the description given in the Qur'an.
As for ʿĀd, the picture is less clear.
Some researchers associate them with the region known as Al Aḥqāf, meaning "the sand dunes," mentioned in the Qur'an.
The exact location of their great city, sometimes linked with "Iram," remains uncertain.
🟡 Evidence Level: Strong historical support for Thamūd. The location of ʿĀd is less certain.
Level Four
Were They Giants?
This is one of the most common questions.
The Qur'an says ʿĀd were people of tremendous strength.
"Who is greater than us in strength?"
(Qur'an 41:15)
However...
The Qur'an does not explicitly say they were giants.
Some scholars have suggested they may have been unusually tall.
Others understood the verses to describe military power, physical strength and great civilisation rather than extraordinary height.
Since Allah has not explicitly told us, we should avoid making definite claims.

Level Five
What Destroyed Them?
Allah tells us exactly how each nation was destroyed.
ʿĀd
Destroyed by a furious wind.
"And as for ʿĀd, they were destroyed by a screaming, violent wind."
(Qur'an 69:6)
Thamūd
Destroyed after killing the miraculous she camel sent as a sign from Allah.
Allah says:
"So the earthquake seized them, and they became lifeless bodies in their homes."
(Qur'an 7:78)
Both destructions came only after repeated warnings from their prophets.
Detective Notes
One lesson stands out more than any other.
These nations were incredibly advanced for their time.
They built impressive structures.
They possessed wealth.
They were powerful.
Yet none of that protected them when they rejected Allah.
Their story is not merely about ancient ruins.
It is about humility before our Creator.
Final Verdict

✔ ʿĀd and Thamūd were real nations.

Exploring possible explanations does not mean they are true or supported by evidence. It simply asks, "If the people of ʿĀd and Thamūd were as powerful and advanced as described, why do we know so little about them today?"
These possibilities should never override the evidence presented earlier in this investigation or the guidance of the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah.
Could Entire Civilisations Really Disappear?
History shows that they can.
Powerful kingdoms have vanished through:
• Natural disasters.
• Wars.
• Climate change.
• Migration.
• Economic collapse.
• The passing of time.
Many once thriving cities remained buried for centuries before archaeologists rediscovered them.
If this happened to more recent civilisations, it is certainly possible that much older ones became even harder to trace.
Why Might Their Buildings Survive but Not Their History?
Stone can outlast writing.
Many ancient books were written on materials that naturally decay.
Libraries have burned.
Empires have fallen.
Languages have disappeared.
A civilisation's buildings may survive long after its written history has been lost.
This helps explain why archaeology often discovers structures before historians fully understand who built them.
Could Their Stories Have Become Legends?
As generations pass, real historical events often become mixed with folklore.
A powerful nation may become "a race of giants."
An impressive city may become "a lost kingdom."
A historical ruler may become a legendary hero.
This does not necessarily mean the original civilisation never existed.
It reminds us that oral traditions often preserve memories while changing details over time.
Why Didn't Allah Tell Us Everything?
One question naturally follows.
If these nations were so remarkable, why doesn't the Qur'an tell us more?
Perhaps because Allah did not reveal the Qur'an as a history book.
Its purpose is guidance.
The Qur'an tells us exactly what we need to know:
• They existed.
• Prophets were sent to them.
• They rejected Allah.
• They were destroyed.
The lesson is preserved.
Many historical details are not.
Could It Actually Have Happened?
The existence of ʿĀd and Thamūd is not a theory.
Allah has informed us that they were real nations.
The unanswered questions concern the details.
Exactly where ʿĀd lived.
How large their cities were.
How advanced their civilisation became.
These remain subjects for historical and archaeological investigation.
Detective's Conclusion
The disappearance of great civilisations should not surprise us.
History repeatedly shows that power, wealth and impressive architecture cannot guarantee that a nation will be remembered.
The greatest legacy any civilisation leaves behind is not its buildings.
It is the lessons others learn from its rise and fall.
Detective's Closing Thoughts
The stories of ʿĀd and Thamūd remind us that arrogance has brought down even the strongest nations.
Their remarkable abilities did not save them.
Their impressive buildings did not protect them.
Their wealth could not prevent Allah's judgement.
Today, their ruins invite questions.
The Qur'an invites reflection.
Perhaps that is why Allah preserved their story.
Not so we would marvel only at what they built, but so we would learn from what ultimately destroyed them.
The strongest civilisation is not the one with the tallest buildings or the greatest power.
It is the one that remains humble before its Creator.
