Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj

"Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us. Grant us mercy from Yourself. Indeed, You are the Bestower."

🟢 Authentic Islamic Evidence Found
The Mystery
Few subjects have generated more mystery than Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj (Gog and Magog).
Who are they?
Where are they today?
Is the barrier of Dhul Qarnayn still standing?
Could they be behind mountains?
Underground?
Beyond an unexplored region?
Or are some of the popular internet theories simply speculation?
Let's investigate.
Level One
What Does the Qur'an Say?
Allah tells us about a righteous ruler called Dhul Qarnayn who travelled across the Earth.
During one of his journeys, he came to a people who complained about Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj.
They asked him to build a barrier between them.
Allah says:
"They said, 'O Dhul Qarnayn, indeed Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj are great corrupters in the land. Shall we pay you tribute so that you might build between us and them a barrier?'"
(Qur'an 18:94)
Dhul Qarnayn refused payment but agreed to help.
He built an enormous barrier using blocks of iron and molten copper.
Allah says:
"So they were unable to scale it, nor were they able to pierce it."
(Qur'an 18:97)
Dhul Qarnayn then said:
"This is a mercy from my Lord. But when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level."
(Qur'an 18:98)
From the Qur'an we know with certainty:
✔ Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj are real people.
✔ They caused corruption.
✔ Allah allowed Dhul Qarnayn to imprison them behind a barrier.
✔ One day, shortly before the Day of Judgement, that barrier will be destroyed by Allah's command.

Level Two
What Does Authentic Sunnah Tell Us?
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave us even more information.
He said that every day Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj dig at the barrier.
When they almost break through, they stop.
By Allah's will, the barrier is restored.
This continues until Allah permits their release near the end of time.
(Sunan Ibn Mājah 4080, authenticated by scholars including al Albānī)
The Prophet ﷺ also described what happens after they are released.
They will spread across the Earth in enormous numbers, consuming everything in their path.
Eventually, Allah will destroy them by sending worms into their necks.
(Sahih Muslim 2937)

Level Three
Where Is the Barrier?
This is one of history's greatest mysteries.
The Qur'an does not tell us where the barrier is located.
Over the centuries, many locations have been proposed.
These include:
• The Caucasus Mountains.
• Central Asia.
• The Great Wall of China (a view rejected by most scholars).
• Other remote mountain regions.
Today, some internet theories suggest Antarctica, hidden lands beyond the polar regions or unknown parts of the Earth.
These ideas are certainly interesting.
However...
There is no authentic Qur'anic or hadith evidence identifying the barrier with Antarctica or any modern location.

Level Four
Could They Be Hidden From Us?
Many people ask:
"If satellites have mapped almost the whole Earth, how could an entire nation remain hidden?"
The honest answer is...
We do not know.
Allah is fully capable of concealing whatever He wills until the time He has decreed.
The Qur'an never tells us how the barrier remains hidden.
Only that it exists, and that one day it will no longer restrain Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj.
This means we should avoid claiming certainty about hidden dimensions, Antarctica, underground worlds or any other theory unless authentic evidence exists.
🟡 Evidence Level: Allah knows their location. We do not.
Level Five
What Happens When They Are Released?
The release of Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj is one of the major signs of the Day of Judgement.
Their appearance occurs after the return of Prophet ʿĪsā (AS).
Unable to fight them, Prophet ʿĪsā (AS) and the believers will seek refuge.
Allah Himself will destroy Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj.
This reminds us of an important lesson.
No matter how great the trial, ultimate victory belongs to Allah.

Detective Notes
This investigation teaches us something very important.
Curiosity is encouraged.
Speculation is not certainty.
Many theories about Antarctica, hidden civilisations or mysterious walls make for fascinating discussions.
Some may even inspire us to study history and geography more deeply.
But as Muslims, we stop where the authentic evidence stops.
That balance protects both our curiosity and our faith.
Final Verdict
🟢 Established
✔ Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj are real human beings.
✔ Dhul Qarnayn built a barrier by Allah's permission.
✔ They remain confined until Allah decrees their release.
✔ Their release is one of the major signs of the Day of Judgement.
✔ Allah Himself will destroy them.
🟡 Supported
✔ The barrier is believed to exist somewhere on Earth, though its location is unknown.
🟠 Unproven
❓ The exact location of the barrier.
❓ Whether it lies in any currently proposed region.
🔴 Speculation
❌ Claims that the barrier has definitely been found.
❌ Claims that Antarctica, hidden lands or any specific location is certainly where Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj are imprisoned.
There is currently no authentic Islamic evidence supporting these claims.
Detective's Thought Experiment
🧩 If This Theory Were True...
The following section is a critical thinking exercise.
Exploring possible explanations does not mean they are true or supported by evidence. It simply asks, "If Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj are currently confined behind a barrier, what might explain why no one has conclusively found them?"
These possibilities should never override the evidence presented earlier in this investigation or the guidance of the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah.
Could Allah Simply Be Concealing Them?
This is perhaps the simplest explanation.
Allah is the Creator of the heavens and the earth.
If He has decreed that Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj remain hidden until an appointed time, then no amount of human technology can uncover them before Allah permits it.
The unseen belongs to Allah.
Not everything hidden is meant to be discovered.
Could the Barrier Be Somewhere Unexpected?
Many people assume the barrier must be obvious.
However, the Qur'an only tells us that it was built between two mountains.
It does not tell us:
• The continent.
• The country.
• The mountain range.
• Whether today's landscape still resembles that of Dhul Qarnayn's time.
Over thousands of years, earthquakes, erosion, landslides and changing geography may have transformed the surrounding region dramatically.
Why Do So Many Theories Exist?
Whenever information is limited, theories naturally emerge.
People have suggested:
• The Caucasus Mountains.
• Central Asia.
• Remote mountain ranges.
• Underground locations.
• Antarctica.
• Hidden valleys.
Most of these theories begin with an interesting observation.
The problem is that observations are not the same as evidence.
Without authentic Islamic evidence or verifiable historical proof, they remain possibilities rather than conclusions.
Could Modern Technology Have Missed Them?
People often ask:
"Surely satellites would have found them by now?"
Satellites are extraordinary tools.
But they cannot see through mountains.
They cannot reveal everything beneath the Earth's surface.
Nor can they uncover what Allah chooses to conceal.
The real question is not what satellites can see.
It is what Allah has allowed humanity to discover.
Could It Actually Have Happened?
For Muslims, the existence of Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj is not a theory.
It is an established truth revealed by Allah.
The mystery lies in the details.
Where the barrier is.
How it remains hidden.
When Allah will permit their release.
These are matters that authentic revelation has not fully explained.
Detective's Conclusion
This investigation reminds us that curiosity should always be balanced with humility.
It is natural to search for answers.
It is also important to recognise when Allah has chosen not to reveal every detail.
A mystery is not solved simply because someone offers an explanation.
It is solved only when the evidence supports the conclusion.
Until then, the most honest position is to distinguish between what we know and what we merely suspect.
Detective's Closing Thoughts
The account of Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj reminds us that some of the greatest realities are hidden from our sight until Allah decrees otherwise.
Modern technology has expanded our knowledge enormously, yet it has not removed the limits of human understanding.
The greatest lesson from this investigation is not about locating a barrier.
It is about trusting Allah's revelation while resisting the temptation to turn every unanswered question into certainty.
Some mysteries deepen our curiosity.
Others strengthen our reliance upon Allah.
Perhaps this one does both.
