The Mystery
Ancient maps have become one of the biggest rabbit holes on the internet.
People point to maps showing mysterious continents...
Unknown islands...
Huge southern lands...
Even claims of lands beyond Antarctica.
Some say these maps prove history has been hidden from us.
Others say they simply reflect the limited geographical knowledge of the time.
So...
What do these ancient maps actually tell us?
Let's investigate.
Level One
What Does Islam Tell Us?
Interestingly...
Neither the Qur'an nor authentic Sunnah describes the complete geography of the Earth.
Instead, Allah repeatedly encourages us to travel, observe and reflect.
Allah says:
"Say, 'Travel through the earth and observe how He began creation.' Then Allah will produce the final creation. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent."
(Qur'an 29:20)
Allah also says:
"Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for people of understanding."
(Qur'an 3:190)
Islam encourages investigation.
It also teaches humility.
We should never claim certainty where Allah has remained silent.

Why Do Ancient Maps Look So Different?
Many maps before the 1700s look very strange compared to modern maps.
Some show:
• Huge southern continents.
• Sea monsters.
• Unknown kingdoms.
• Islands that no longer appear on maps.

One famous example is the 1587 world map by Urbano Monte.
It is often shared online as "proof" of hidden lands.
However, historians explain that the map was designed as a circular projection to represent a globe laid flat.
It reflects the geographical knowledge of the sixteenth century, mixed with exploration reports and educated guesses.

Absolutely.
History is constantly changing as archaeologists make new discoveries.
Entire cities have been uncovered beneath jungle.
Ancient civilisations have been found beneath sand.

Being open to new discoveries is different from accepting every internet theory as fact.

Could Ancient Explorers Have Known More Than We Think?
One possibility is that some ancient sailors travelled much further than historians currently recognise.
Knowledge of distant coastlines, islands or trade routes may have been gradually lost as empires rose and fell.
History has shown that knowledge can disappear just as easily as it can be gained.
Could Geography Have Changed?
The Earth has never been completely static.
Over thousands of years:
• Sea levels have risen.
• Rivers have changed course.
• Earthquakes have reshaped coastlines.
• Volcanic eruptions have created and destroyed islands.
Some places shown on ancient maps may genuinely have looked different when those maps were produced.

Could Maps Have Mixed Fact with Assumption?
Ancient cartographers often worked with limited information.
They combined:
• First hand exploration.
• Sailors' reports.
• Earlier maps.

Why Do So Many People See Hidden Lands?

At the same time, no ancient map has yet been shown to prove the existence of hidden continents or unknown worlds.
