🟢 Authentic Islamic Evidence Found
The Mystery
Who was Dhul Qarnayn?
A mighty king?
A prophet?
Alexander the Great?
Cyrus the Great?
Or someone whose identity has been lost to history?
Few people mentioned in the Qur'an have generated as much discussion among historians and scholars as Dhul Qarnayn.
Let's investigate.
Level One
What Does the Qur'an Say?
The story of Dhul Qarnayn appears in Surah al Kahf (18:83 to 98).
Allah says:
"And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about Dhul Qarnayn. Say, 'I will recite to you about him a report.'"
(Qur'an 18:83)
Allah tells us that He granted Dhul Qarnayn authority, resources and the means to travel.
He journeyed west.
He journeyed east.
He then reached a place between two mountains where a people asked him for protection from Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj.
Rather than accepting payment, he built a mighty barrier of iron and molten copper.
After completing it, he said:
"This is a mercy from my Lord. But when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level."
(Qur'an 18:98)
The Qur'an presents Dhul Qarnayn as:
✔ A righteous leader.
✔ A man who judged fairly.
✔ Someone who recognised that all success came from Allah.
🟢 Evidence Level: Established.
Level Two
Was He a Prophet?
Interestingly...
The Qur'an never calls Dhul Qarnayn a prophet.
Authentic hadith also do not clearly identify him as one.
Many classical scholars believed he was a righteous king rather than a prophet.
Others held different opinions.
Because authentic revelation does not settle this question, we should avoid speaking with certainty.
🟡 Evidence Level: Scholarly difference of opinion.
Level Three
Who Do Historians Think He Was?
Over the centuries several suggestions have been made.
Alexander the Great
For many centuries this was the most popular opinion.
However...
Alexander worshipped multiple gods and historical records do not fit the Qur'anic description particularly well.
For this reason, many contemporary scholars reject this identification.
Cyrus the Great
Some modern scholars suggest Cyrus fits the Qur'anic description more closely.
He was known as a just ruler.
He respected different peoples.
His empire was vast.
However...
No definitive evidence proves he was Dhul Qarnayn.
Someone Else Entirely
Many scholars conclude that Dhul Qarnayn may have been another ruler whose identity has simply been lost to history.
🟠 Evidence Level: Unknown.
Level Four
What About the Barrier?
The barrier built by Dhul Qarnayn remains one of history's greatest mysteries.
The Qur'an describes:
• Iron.
• Molten copper.
• A location between two mountains.
The Qur'an does not identify the location.
Over the centuries people have proposed:
• The Caucasus Mountains.
• Central Asia.
• Other mountain regions.
No proposal has been conclusively verified.
As Muslims, we should distinguish between the certainty of the Qur'an and the uncertainty of later theories.
🟡 Evidence Level: Barrier confirmed. Location unknown.
Level Five
Why Doesn't Allah Tell Us His Name?
Perhaps this is the most important question.
Allah could have told us exactly who Dhul Qarnayn was.
Instead...
Allah focused on what he did, not what he was called.
His justice.
His humility.
His trust in Allah.
His refusal to abuse power.
These are the lessons Allah chose to preserve.
Perhaps that tells us something about what matters most.
Detective Notes
Sometimes we become so focused on solving a mystery that we overlook the lesson.
The Qur'an rarely tells stories simply to satisfy curiosity.
It tells them to guide our hearts.
Whether Dhul Qarnayn was Cyrus, Alexander or another ruler entirely changes very little.
His character changes everything.
Final Verdict
🟢 Established
✔ Dhul Qarnayn was a real person.
✔ Allah granted him great authority.
✔ He travelled extensively.
✔ He built the barrier that confined Ya'jūj and Ma'jūj.
✔ He attributed his success to Allah.
🟡 Supported
✔ He was a righteous ruler.
✔ Many scholars believe he was not a prophet, although this is not stated explicitly in authentic revelation.
🟠 Unproven
❓ That he was Alexander the Great.
❓ That he was Cyrus the Great.
❓ His exact historical identity.
❓ The precise location of the barrier.
🔴 Speculation
❌ Claims that his identity has been definitively proven.
❌ Claims that a particular archaeological site has unquestionably been identified as the barrier.
There is currently no conclusive evidence for either claim.
Detective's Thought Experiment
🧩 If This Theory Were True...
The following section is a critical thinking exercise.
Exploring possible explanations does not mean they are true or supported by evidence. It simply asks, "If Dhul Qarnayn was a real historical ruler whose identity has been forgotten, what might explain why history no longer clearly recognises him?"
These possibilities should never override the evidence presented earlier in this investigation or the guidance of the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah.
Could His Identity Have Been Lost Over Time?
History has forgotten countless kings, rulers and entire empires.
Many ancient records have been lost through:
• War.
• Fire.
• Floods.
• Natural decay.
• The collapse of civilisations.
It is entirely possible that Dhul Qarnayn was well known in his own time but gradually disappeared from surviving historical records.
Could Different Cultures Have Given Him Different Names?
One historical figure may be remembered by different names in different languages.
As stories spread across regions, names often change through:
• Translation.
• Pronunciation.
• Local traditions.
• Different writing systems.
This could explain why historians have suggested several possible identities while none can be confirmed with certainty.
Why Doesn't the Qur'an Name Him?
This is perhaps the most interesting question.
If Allah had wished, He could have revealed Dhul Qarnayn's personal name.
Instead, the Qur'an focuses almost entirely on:
• His justice.
• His leadership.
• His humility.
• His reliance upon Allah.
Perhaps the lesson matters more than the identity.
The Qur'an consistently directs our attention towards guidance rather than curiosity alone.
Could Archaeology One Day Identify Him?
It is possible.
New discoveries are made every year.
Ancient inscriptions continue to be translated.
Entire cities have been rediscovered after remaining hidden for centuries.
Future evidence may one day point strongly towards a particular historical ruler.
Or the mystery may remain unsolved.
Until convincing evidence appears, the honest answer remains that we do not know.
Could It Actually Have Happened?
The existence of Dhul Qarnayn is not a theory.
Allah has informed us that he was real.
The mystery concerns his historical identity.
Many sincere attempts have been made to identify him.
None has yet gained universal acceptance among historians or Islamic scholars.
That uncertainty should encourage humility rather than speculation.
Detective's Conclusion
Not every mystery is meant to be solved immediately.
Sometimes the absence of certainty protects us from becoming distracted by details that are less important than the lessons themselves.
History seeks names.
The Qur'an seeks guidance.
The two often complement one another, but they are not always trying to answer the same questions.
Detective's Closing Thoughts
Dhul Qarnayn stands as an example of leadership rooted in humility.
Despite being granted immense power, he never claimed greatness for himself.
Instead, he repeatedly acknowledged that his success came from Allah alone.
Whether historians eventually discover his true identity or not, his character remains far more important than his name.
Perhaps that is exactly why Allah preserved his story in the way He did.
The greatest legacy a person leaves behind is not whether the world remembers their name.
It is whether Allah remembers their deeds.
As always...
Allah knows best.
