Deep Ocean Mysteries

The Mystery
More than 70% of our planet is covered by water.
Yet, despite satellites, submarines and modern technology, much of the deep ocean remains unexplored.
New species are still being discovered.
Ancient shipwrecks continue to emerge.
Strange underwater mountains, volcanoes and valleys remain hidden beneath kilometres of water.
So...
How much do we really know about Earth's oceans?
And does Islam have anything to say about these mysterious depths?
Let's investigate.
Level One
What Does the Qur'an Say?
The Qur'an repeatedly invites us to reflect on the seas as signs of Allah's greatness.
Allah says:
"And He it is Who has subjected the sea for you so that you may eat from it tender meat and extract from it ornaments which you wear. And you see the ships ploughing through it, that you may seek of His bounty and perhaps you will be grateful."
(Qur'an 16:14)
Allah also describes the darkness of the deep ocean in remarkable detail.
"Or they are like layers of darkness within a deep sea covered by waves, upon which are waves, above which are clouds. Layers of darkness, one above another. If one puts out his hand, he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allah has not granted light, for him there is no light."
(Qur'an 24:40)
This verse beautifully captures the extreme darkness found in the deep ocean.

Level Two
What Does Authentic Sunnah Tell Us?
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recognised the sea as one of Allah's blessings.
When asked about using seawater for purification, he replied:
"Its water is pure and its dead animals are lawful."
(Sunan Abi Dāwūd 83, Jāmiʿ al Tirmidhī 69, authenticated as Sahih)
While the Sunnah does not describe deep sea exploration, it encourages believers to recognise Allah's signs throughout creation.

Level Three
What Have We Discovered?
The deeper we explore, the more extraordinary the oceans become.
Scientists have discovered:
• Hydrothermal vents reaching temperatures above 300°C.
• Giant underwater mountain ranges.
• Deep sea volcanoes.
• Creatures producing their own light through bioluminescence.
• Fish living under immense pressure.
• Ancient shipwrecks preserved for centuries.
Thousands of new marine species are still identified every decade.

Level Four
How Much Remains Unexplored?
A common claim online is that we have explored only "5% of the ocean."
The reality is a little more nuanced.
Large areas of the seafloor have been mapped at low resolution using satellites.
However, only a relatively small proportion has been explored in close detail by submersibles and direct observation.
In other words...
We know the broad shape of much of the ocean floor.
But we have only closely examined a small part of it.
There is still an enormous amount left to discover.

Level Five
The Internet Theories
The deep ocean has inspired countless theories.
These include:
• Hidden civilisations.
• Underwater cities.
• Unknown creatures.
• Secret military bases.
• Entrances to a hollow Earth.
• Lost continents.
Some discoveries have shown that entire ancient settlements now lie beneath the sea due to rising sea levels after the last Ice Age.
However...
There is currently no reliable evidence proving the more extraordinary claims.
Curiosity is encouraged.
Claims require evidence.

The ocean reminds us how small our knowledge really is.
Every year, scientists discover creatures no human has ever seen before.
Entire ecosystems have been found where many believed life could not exist.
This should increase our sense of wonder, not our certainty.
Allah's creation is far greater than what we have explored.

Exploring possible explanations does not mean they are true or supported by evidence. It simply asks, "If the deep oceans still hold major undiscovered secrets, what might explain why so much remains unknown?"
These possibilities should never override the evidence presented earlier in this investigation or the guidance of the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah.
Could the Ocean Simply Be Too Vast?
The simplest explanation is often the strongest.
The oceans cover more than two thirds of the Earth's surface.
Many areas lie several kilometres beneath the surface under immense pressure, freezing temperatures and complete darkness.
Exploring every part of the ocean is an enormous challenge.
Perhaps the mystery is not that so much remains unknown.
Perhaps it is that we have only recently begun exploring it.
Could Ancient History Be Hidden Beneath the Sea?
Sea levels have changed dramatically throughout Earth's history.
If coastlines were once much lower, it is possible that:
• Ancient settlements.
• Trading ports.
• Villages.
• Early civilisations.
Now lie beneath the sea.
Archaeologists have already discovered submerged settlements in several parts of the world.
Future discoveries may reveal even more.
Why Do So Many Extraordinary Theories Exist?
The deep ocean naturally fuels the imagination.
Its darkness and inaccessibility have inspired stories of:
• Lost cities.
• Unknown creatures.
• Hidden kingdoms.
• Advanced civilisations.
• Unexplained structures.
Some of these stories are inspired by genuine discoveries.
Others grow through speculation as they are shared online.
A mystery should inspire investigation, not immediate conclusions.
Could There Be Species We Have Never Seen?
Almost certainly.
Scientists continue to discover new marine species every year.
Some are unlike anything previously known.
This reminds us that the ocean still holds many surprises.
Discovering new life, however, is very different from proving extraordinary claims about hidden civilisations or mythical creatures.
Could It Actually Be True?
The deep ocean unquestionably contains mysteries.
That is supported by ongoing scientific exploration.
What remains uncertain is the nature of those mysteries.
As investigators, we should welcome every new discovery while resisting the temptation to fill gaps in our knowledge with assumptions.
The evidence should always lead the investigation.

The ocean teaches patience.
Every expedition uncovers something new.
Every discovery reminds us how much remains unexplored.
The unknown is not evidence of the extraordinary.
It is simply an invitation to keep learning.
That is the mindset of every good investigator.

The pursuit of knowledge should never replace humility.
Instead, it should strengthen our appreciation for the limitless wisdom and power of our Creator.
